Fire Extinguishers For BoatsFor leisure vessels the most common extinguishers are the smaller 1 kg and 2 kg ABC powder, which are multipurpose and tackle most fires.

People often worry about the mess powder makes, but it is a very effective fire fighting medium.

Better to put the fire out and clear up a mess than have your boat burned to the waterline!  Galleys should have a fire blanket easily accessible to throw over a cooker fire.

Commercial vessels use larger extinguishers such as 4 kg and 6 kg ABC powder and AFFF Foam. These extinguishers are multipurpose and a fire blanket should be fitted in the galley.
